About Taste of Home

Taste of Home brings the bold, comforting flavors of Chinese street food to the heart of Wellington. Known for our hand-pulled noodles, fragrant broths, and house-made chilli oil, we love feeding our local community authentic cuisine from our home to yours.

We used to work in hotels and restaurants, so starting our own business was always a thought in our minds, but we just needed the opportunity. We had started looking for a place of our own a year before we found our current shop, but either it wasn't the right location or it was too expensive. In the end, our shop came to us through a friend. At the time it was just a small fish and chip shop, run by one guy.

We thought that Tina could run it by herself at first, but as we got busier and busier Steve quit his full-time job and came on board.

When we started, honestly, we didn't really have a direction or knew what we were going to do: cooking and running a business are totally different. We wanted to make food that we liked to eat at home - both of us cooked Western food at work, but when we came home we ate Asian food. That's where the idea came from and why we called our business Taste of Home.

We tried lots of different things at the beginning, just to see what people would like and what we liked making. We wanted to do something different from what was available in Wellington - we didn't want to just run a fish and chip shop or do Asian food that people were used to. We settled on our menu only recently - we wanted to offer reasonably priced comfort food, accessible to everyone. Something simple, but that everyone would like to eat at home.

The shop is small, yes, but we like that cozy feeling. We want you to feel at home, eating our food.

We've grown the business slowly, step-by-step. We didn't plan too far ahead - we just wanted to work hard and put 100% effort into everything we did. We're lucky because we do something different that people quite like, and we're really glad that people support us and like our food. We're very grateful.

Wellington is very supportive - not just the customers, but also other small business owners. We're very appreciative to have such a strong community, and look forward to continuing to serve you all for years to come!
